Teaching British and American Cultural Studies: Current challenges, future solutions
Faculty of English, Adam Mickiewicz University
26 March 2026
As part of next year’s FLARE conference (Foreign Language Advancement through Research and Education) at the Faculty of English, we will organise a series of sessions that focus on teaching cultural studies.
The content of British and American life and institutions courses, taught as part of BA and MA English Philology programmes, is highly dynamic: societies change, and so too political, economic and geo-political realities. In most recent years, Brexit, Trump and the Ukraine war all have impacted course content, course dynamics, and composition of our classes. By no means can such changes be covered by any coursebook available in either print or online format. Additionally, Gen Z students have entered our classrooms, with their diMerent habits, interests and background knowledge. As practitioners we have to face all the challenges head-on and thus need to be flexible and ensure that the courses we oMer are up to date, achieve key learning objectives and fulfil students’ needs.
Combined with this, real-world changes, such as COVID and the rise of AI and technology in teaching, have impacted upon HOW we teach our courses.
To facilitate meeting these challenges, we are organising a workshop for practitioners that teach courses on British and American life and institutions. The event will be an opportunity to share experiences and best practices so that we can return to our institutions with a raft of new ideas and perspectives. As well as the workshop session, we plan to have plenary talks by experts on key challenges that we face, including AI, profile of students now, and teaching methodology.
The workshop is scheduled to begin at 9:00 and will end at 18:00 the same day. It consists of 2 plenary lectures and 3 sessions. If anybody is interested to attend with no paper, you are welcome to fill in the SharePoint table provided. There is no fee, and refreshments and coMee will be provided. Lunch will be served in our canteen and is paid for individually. The prices are aMordable, and the menu can be sent in advance upon request. You will then be able to place your order beforehand so that the service runs smoothly and eMiciently.
After the conference, we would like to invite you to dinner, which will be paid for individually. Those who are interested are kindly asked to inform us by March 1st .
We will provide you with a certificate of participation. In case you need an invoice to have some of the expenses covered, please notify us beforehand.
The venue of the conference is located in Poznań 60-780, ul. Grunwaldzka 6.
