The Dynamics of Influence in Post-millennial North American Literature and Culture

Call for papers

ExRe(y) Project invites article proposals for a thematic volume of the peer-reviewed open-access journal Lublin Studies in Modern Languages and Literature, indexed, among others, in Scopus, Web of Science, and ERIH Plus. The volume, titled “EXposuRE. The Dynamics of Influence in Post-millennial North American Literature and Culture”, is to be published in March 2026.

We seek manuscripts that focus on the topic of the (broadly understood) exposure in American and Canadian literature and culture of the last two decades.

Topics may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • secrets, conspiracies, myths, and the many shades of debunking
  • sensitive material, whistleblowers, and the threat of exposure
  • hideouts, shelters, asylums
  • masks, posing, and role-playing
  • nudity, sexuality, freedom vs. indecent exposure, harassment, and objectification
  • expectation/right to privacy and infringements
  • environmental threats, radiation, nuclear waste, anthropogenic influence
  • health threats, infectious agents, addiction, treatment
  • risk society and the financialization of daily life
  • temptation, manipulation, suggestibility
  • (un)consciousness (bias, subliminal stimuli, Freudian slips)
  • nature or nurture? (genetics, inheritance, role models, guidance)
  • pressure (peer pressure, activism, lobbying, expectations)
  • authority (bias, appeal to, questioning of)
  • going viral (public attention, influencers, celebrity culture)
  • publicity and (or?) propaganda
  • scandal and (fake) news exposure
  • social media, online platforms, and the dynamics of engagement
  • judgement and the court of public opinion
  • literary and cultural hybridization

Titled abstracts of up to 250 words should be submitted as email attachments to the volume editors, Julia Nikiel (julia.nikiel@mail.umcs.pl) and Kamil Rusiłowicz (kamil.rusilowicz@kul.pl) by December 15, 2024. All submissions must include the author’s name, affiliation, email address, title of the proposal, abstract, five keywords, and a brief bio.

Deadline for submission of article proposals (max. 250 words): December 15, 2024

Deadline for editors’ acceptance/rejection of proposals: December 31, 2024

Deadline for submission of full articles: May 15, 2025 (the suggested maximum length of

the article is 30 000 characters with spaces; articles should be submitted via MCSU online

Deadline for peer review and final acceptance/rejection of articles: July 31, 2025

Deadline for submission of final versions of articles (after reviews): October 31, 2025

The ExRe(y) Project encompasses conferences and publications that are meant to x-ray key developments in contemporary North-American literature and culture. It is co-organized by Department of British and American Studies at Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin and Department of American Literature and Culture at The John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin.
