Review Essay: A Dispatch from California: Blackbox at UC Riverside, Fall Season 2023

Abstract: This is a review essay on Rickerby Hinds’ new play Blackbox which premiered in October 2023 at the University of California Riverside. The play tells the history of an unsung American hero, Henry Box Brown who escaped slavery by mailing himself in a wooden box. It is argued that the play is an important contribution to the growing body of hip-hop theater works and offers an interesting and compelling example of theatrical experimentation.
