Making the Necessary Theater in Gdańsk: Documenting and Evaluating Carlos Morton’s Trapped in Amber

Abstract: The article documents and evaluates Carlos Morton’s Trapped in Amber/Zaklęte w jantarze, a Chicanx teatro play commissioned and produced by the International Border Studies Center (IBSC) at the University of Gdańsk in 2022. It is divided into two sections. The first sketches the origins of the Chicanx Theater, introduces Morton, and explains IBSC’s goals. It also documents the production process and, drawing on debates in American studies and border studies, offers an interpretetation of the piece and controversy it precipitated. Using social science method of survey reports section two analyses then the viewers’ responses to the staged workshop production. The article mixes documentary style with analysis and data study.
